Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It remained one of the largest East coast railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form todays rail giant, CSX Transportation.
